Sasi Edavarad, a renowned Kerala mural artist, hails from the small town of Perambra in Kozhikode district. He lives with his wife and two daughters. Over the years, he has made significant contributions to temple murals as well as to several major public and private art projects.
After completing his basic education, Sasi Edavarad joined the Universal Arts School of Fine Arts, Kozhikode. It was during this period that he developed a deep interest in the traditional mural art. He enrolled himself to the prestigious Institute of Mural Painting at Guruvayur in 1996. As part of his training, he visited numerous temples, palaces and ancient mural centres to make an in-depth study of their intricate styles and artistic beauty.
With the sole aim of preserving and developing this authentic heritage, he designed his own curriculum based on traditional iconographic texts. This brought out more clarity and laid a strong foundation to the education system of Kerala murals. Since 2005, he has been teaching across various parts of India, following the principles of taalapramanam. At present, he serves as a Consultant Faculty in the Department of Mural Painting at the Vastuvidya Gurukulam, Aranmula.
Alongside teaching, he actively engages with his students in reviving the traditional grandeur of Kerala mural painting. To strengthen this mission, he recently founded the Chitrasopanam Art Foundation, with the objective of introducing Kerala mural art to the younger generation, preserving its pure tradition and promoting research in the subject.
Through his artistic creations, teaching and heritage preservation initiatives, Sasi Edavarad continues to dedicate himself to the cultural and spiritual essence of Kerala mural art.
